Messi: Not just content with being the best frontward in the world, Messi seemingly set his scenery on proving himself as the best midfielder on the globe as well this season. The 2016 version of Messi was indeed rather dissimilar to previous versions, dropping more deeply more often and for longer. Andres Iniesta's feet are probably quite sore after an entire season of his team-mate traction on them. Whilst in the last 5 years Messi's season would have been defined by great goals (and there were more than a few of them) this campaign was more about threaded passes and trimmed through balls. If Messi can do it - going from frontline frontman to midfield maestro - then surely Wayne Rooney can too, right?
Cr7: Ronaldo's season, much like Real Madrid's as a whole, can be used as two contrasting halves - before Rafael Benitez and after Rafael Benitez. For the Portuguese winger, Benitez's tenure, no subject how fleeting, meant two times training sessions, scoring droughts and questionable tactics. Zinedine Zidane, on the other hand, meant more liberty, more ass-kissing and even more goals. Oh, and another Winners League title. 2015/16 certainly wasn't a vintage Cr7 season per se but he finished it by winning the biggest reward in football with one kick. That is certainly somehow quintessentially Ronaldo.
